Meta-Synthesis of the Afghanistan Appeal
the project.
This meta-synthesis analysed the collective humanitarian response to the 2021 Afghanistan Appeal, synthesising findings from MEAL-related reports, real-time response reviews, and population perception surveys, and looking at the overall work of DEC members and others within the larger Afghanistan and humanitarian context.
Our team took a feminist learning approach, recognising and examining diverse ways of learning and comprehension across different communities and prioritising gathering lessons about exclusion. This allowed for holistic, encompassing, and culturally attuned understanding, essential for effective disaster emergency responses.
Considering the dynamic political shifts in Afghanistan, our approach was trauma- and gender-sensitive. For example, we integrated gender within the quality evidence framework and implemented reflexivity exercises to draw attention and ensure the inclusivity of women where it was safe.
The final meta-synthesis identified valuable lessons from the Afghanistan appeal and provided actionable recommendations for programming that can inform improvements in future humanitarian action.
